Galloway, off to a good start.

As we sit with a cuppa and our map plotting where to head next, we realise just how welcoming our first two nights have been here. We were both equal measures of excited and anxious when we left Cumbria. First time living permanently in the van, completely relying on a vehicle for shelter, fending for ourselves on-the-go etc. We eased ourselves in gently by spending two cosy nights at Glentrool camping and caravan site. It has been a dream start for us. The campsite is perfect, loads of hikes from the site, brilliant amenities and lovely owners. We realised just how lucky we were to start our journey here.

If you want a well kitted out campsite right on the doorstep of Galloway forest, we can’t recommend this site enough. We felt instantly welcomed by Fran and Jen and they shared their top tips for hiking trails in the local area; you can’t beat some local knowledge when you’re in a new place. The campsite itself has everything you could ever need: showers, wifi, ample space to wash up your pots and pans, a hut complete with a fridge and microwave and a well-stocked shop for bits and bobs.

The first night we were here the skies were so clear. Being in a dark sky park the stars were magnificent. The second night we were just settling down to go to sleep and we heard what we thought was a tawny owl hooting in a nearby tree. Two of Chlo’s hopes for this trip were to see the stars without pollution and to hear owls. So all in all, these past two nights have been brilliant.

We’ve almost gotten to grips with cooking proper dinners on the stove. Already, risotto is a winner. We can’t wait to see where we will end up next.

Head over to if you want to stay where we did!
